Utilized an innovative sturgeon-exclusive screen to protect endangered white sturgeon

Carefully relocated wildlife to more suitable and less-populated forested areas

Harnessing the phenomenal natural power of water is a prime example of generating renewable, environmentally-sustainable energy. The Waneta Hydroelectric Expansion on the Pend d’Oreille River in British Columbia harnesses energy from water. Aecon was contracted to expand the existing power plant by 335MW. This included the construction of a new intake structure, 2 power tunnels, a new power house, and the supply and installation of the power generating equipment. From an environmental perspective, an experimental, innovative new sturgeon-exclusion screen has also been installed to prevent endangered White Sturgeon from entering the facility when the plant reduces to minimum output. Once fully operational, the dam will generate virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions. What’s more, fish currently inhabiting the river will benefit upstream from increased habitat productivity and, downstream, from reduced dissolved gas levels.
